The Beach House / 2019
‘The Beach House’ (‘A Casa da Praia’) is Anabela Almeida’s grandparents’ house in Mozambique. It was there where the family would spend the weekends in the beginning of the 70s, 200 kilometres from Nampula, at Chocas’ beach. Grandparents, parents, uncles, cousins and friends. In 2019 the family returns to Nampula and to Chocas’ beach, a homecoming and a comeback. In which way the passage of time altered the remembrances, the feelings, the vision which that family has of the events of that epoque?
The performance recovers that personal experience in parallel with the history of a people under deep change. It grips the memory – a unique memory, in the first person, or in many first persons – before it disappears forever. Stories of many personal convulsions, intimate, crossed with a group’s collective memory which posteriorly becomes the official history of a people.
